WHAT
What inspires JABHard? One word …Family.
JABHard is wearable t-shirt art created from the heart and soul of a mother to convince her daughters of their natural beauty.
WHERE
Now a permanent resident in New York City with my equally creative husband and five individual daughters, through play and homework activities I rediscovered my love to design and create.
WHO
I grew up in London’s borough of Brent a child of Jamaican heritage. I discovered a love of design in school so I followed my dream and studied Fashion Embroidery Technology and Fashion Design Technology at The London College of Fashion.
I was employed while at college at Topshops flagship Oxford Street store selling Rene designer wigs and Barry M cosmetics before moving on to designer clothing at Londons Selfridges department store, followed by a full circle return to cosmetics with fragrance for Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Moshino to name a few.
WHY
I became disenchanted at my children's appetite to constantly be bought the latest movie character led items and became aware of a gap in the market for characterful clothing that reflected their image.
Our family’s are diverse and our relatives are black white and in between.
My daughters would walk around with with yellow satin dress up skirts on their heads looking in the mirror pretending to brush it as if it were their own and have an epic meltdown when their natural afro hair had to be styled.
THE NAME
JABHard is made up of my maiden name and the way some Jamaicans describe the comb passing through very coily and natural hair.-“lard! How your head tough and hard so!!!!! (With the accent)
